Part three
Every time a masked coin is displayed on the screen you will have to squeeze the power grip.
Squeezing the grip makes the fluid level move up in the thermometer as before.
The height you reach determines the fraction of the coin you will be allowed to keep.
The total amount of money that you have won so far will be written on the screen after every trial.
In short: the more you squeeze the more money you win!

「the fraction of the coin」の「the coin」は、「a masked coin is displayed on the screen」のことを指しているだろうから、やっぱり表示されたコインが報酬になるのでは。

ということで $10 ドル出して論文を買ってみました。本文にも、

We developed an incentive force task using money as a reward, a manipulation consistently shown to activate reward circuits in the human brain (9-11). The exact level of motivation was manipulated by randomly assigning the amount at stake as one pound or one penny. Pictures of the corresponding coins were displayed on a screen at the beginning of each trial, between two masks (Fig. 1).

Subjects were instructed that the higher the fluid level the more they would get to keep of the monetary stake. At the end of the trial, subjects were given visual feedback concerning the amount of money they had accumulated. Thus, this cumulative total was increased on every trial, though negligibly when one penny was at stake, relative to one pound.

と書いてあります。

で、この論文のメインテーマは、「意識的な動機付け・無意識な動機付けでは、脳の活性化する部分は違うのか同じなのか」ということのようです。100msec でコインが表示されるケースは「意識的な動機付け」に対応して、50msec の場合は「無意識な動機付け」に対応するようです。

素人なんで間違っているかも知れません。

_ 親知らずを抜いた

昨日のRubyKaigi2007のチケット発売の時間には、歯医者で親知らずを抜いてました。ので、チケットは買えず。

歯医者は嫌いだし、親知らずを抜くのは痛いと聞いていたので、行く前はかなり気が重かったのです。が、行ってみたらば、これが全然痛くなかったんです。ちょっとこれは驚いた。疼いた時用に痛み止めをもらったのですが、結局飲まずに済んでいます。

これがドイツの科学力かっ!!(違います。)

麻酔をしてペンチみたいな器具で抜くという原理は変わらなくても、地味に進歩してるんですかね。

余談ですが、行く前は脳が無意識がどうのと考えていたので、随分気が紛れました。
